If we love our neighbor

The following is a letter to the editor I just sent to our Muncie newspaper, The Star Press.

Dear Star Press,

I am writing regarding the front page article from July 30 titled, “Transgender woman claims she was mistreated by BMH“.

Our sexual identity as male or female is not based on human opinion but is given to us by God. As it says in Genesis 1, “Male and female He created them.” The DNA of every cell in a man’s body proclaims that he is male — and even if this DNA could be altered, a man or woman’s sexual identity remains the work of God.

We should not snicker at nor insult a man who claims to be a woman, as Mr. Vaught claims BMH personnel did. But neither should we do what The Star Press did and call male, female, referring to Mr. Vaught as “she” throughout the article. This is manifestly false. Those who care nothing for Mr. Vaught will do such things to avoid trouble — but if we love our neighbor, we must speak the truth in love to him.

May the writers of The Star Press have such boldness in the future.

Sincerely,

(signed) Daniel S. Meyer

Update: Here is the letter as it appeared in the August 12, 2010 Star Press:

We should not snicker at nor insult a man who claims to be a woman, as Erin Vaught claims BMH personnel did. But neither should we do what The Star Press did and call male female, referring to Vaught as “she” throughout the article. This is manifestly false.
