We are the metaphor

The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous
And His ears are open to their cry
–Psalm 34:15

The Bible says God has eyes
We know God doesn’t have eyes
He is a Spirit
Spirits don’t have eyes
We have eyes
These dim things
We take the wrong set of keys off the rack by mistake
We trip over toys in the darkness
We need glasses to discern whether our neighbor is looking at us
Or at the mailbox
We can’t tell Jacob from Esau
We have eyes
God doesn’t have eyes

The Bible says God has ears
We know God doesn’t have ears
He is a Spirit
Spirits don’t have ears
We have ears
These faint things
“I’m sorry – could you repeat that once more?”
“You said that?  I must have completely misheard you”
“What was that, dear?”
We have ears
God doesn’t have ears

The Bible says God will redeem with a mighty hand
And an outstretched arm
We know God doesn’t have hands
God doesn’t have arms
He is a Spirit
Spirits don’t have hands and arms
We have hands
These faltering things
We pick up the glass of water
But fumble it and it crashes to the floor
We have arms
These feeble things
That try to lift the heavy thing
But have to set it down and rest
So we don’t throw out our back
We have hands
We have arms
God doesn’t have hands and arms

The Bible says God is our Father and Jesus is His Son
We know that God isn’t a Father
Jesus isn’t a Son
We are fathers
We are sons
As fathers we discipline and instruct our sons
But we don’t consistently lead them in the Way
We fail
We sin
We err
As sons we do not honor our fathers
And we did not obey them when we were little
How then will our sons know the way of the Lord?
But we are fathers
We are sons
God isn’t a Father
Jesus isn’t a Son

No!

No!

God, You are the true Father
Jesus the true Son
We are blind
But Your eyes are always on the righteous
We are deaf
But Your ears never fail to hear our cries
We are weak and feeble
But with Your mighty hand and outstretched arm
You have redeemed us
Thank you, Father, for Your forgiveness and love!
We worship at Your feet
We dance in Your goodness and glory
You are the Reality
We are the metaphor
