Good works

When we were dead in our trespasses and sins
Good works didn’t save us
Obedience to God’s Law didn’t save us
Only by God’s grace through faith were we saved
And that faith was a gift
No boasting
No worrying
Just rejoicing in the free gift of our good Father

Once saved, good works don’t save us
Obedience to God’s Law doesn’t save us
We’ve already been transferred from death to life
Nothing to earn
Nothing to pay
No boasting
No worrying
Just rejoicing in the free gift of our good Father

Our new heart loves our Father
We love Him
We trust Him
We desire His ways
His ways are not odious to us
They are not burdensome
We were dead, but He made us alive
We were naked, but He clothed us
We were cast down, but he made a place for us at His table
We were despised, but His banner over us is love
We are His people
He is our God

When He speaks, we hear His voice
His voice is pleasant to our ear
We trust Him
We follow Him
Obedient
Yielded
Not dragging our hoofs
Not plodding
Frolicking
Laughing
Baa-ing
As only the redeemed can frolick, laugh, and baa

What if we do not trust Him?
What if we have no desire to follow him?
What if His voice is not pleasant to our ear?
What if His ways are odious to us?
What if we drag our hoofs?
What if we plod unwillingly?
What if we find His ways burdensome?
What if we bridle at the thought of commands to obey?

Have we been freed to do as we please
Or as He pleases?
Do we wish He had no claim on us?

By obedience has no sheep accomplished salvation
(Except for One)
But no sheep
Having received salvation
Rejects his Shepherd
Because those who have been made alive, live
They do not continue in the ways of death

O rebellious sheep
Repent
And turn to your Savior!
