And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!”
– Matthew 8:24-25
Tut tut tut. Those disciples! How could they fear, with Jesus right there with them in the boat?
And then we realize, with laughter and shame, that we’re not only no better than the disciples, we’re worse: for Jesus was only with them, but He is in us (John 14:20)! Yet we tremble and fear.
Yes, this we realize with laughter and shame, and repentance–and joy, and courage, and love, and faith, and song:
“Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you… The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
– Deuteronomy 31:6, 8
Glory to God!
