The father loves first

For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory… –Hebrews 2:10

A mother loves her son early, before he is born, when she feels him growing inside her.

But a father loves still earlier—a father loves his son before he is begotten, and desires that he be, and plants his seed to give him existence. The father loves first…

Earthly fathers often don’t have this in mind—they’re thinking only of their pleasure. They grudgingly permit a few seeds to be planted, and after that they say, “Enough! No more.”

Suppose God the Father were like that—suppose He looked at all the spiritual sons He begot earlier in history (say in Hebrews 11) and said, “Enough! No more.”

Thank God that He has not abandoned His fatherly desire to beget, but in every generation raises up new sons! Thank God He hasn’t said, “Enough!”

Thank God that the Father loves first.
