Just like our father

Have you ever thought it unfair that our first father Adam should represent you? Have you ever thought, “What a rotten deal that Adam fell and I got smeared with the guilt of it too.”

Perhaps you have followed the logic one step farther: “If I had been the first man, I wouldn’t have sinned and ruined everything like Adam did.”

First of all, thank God that in God’s economy it’s possible for one man to represent another. Without that there would be no salvation, because none of us is able to pay for our own sins. We who confess our sins and trust the atoning blood of Jesus for our salvation go free because of His righteousness…

But back to our bitterness about the Fall:

God: “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” (Genesis 3:11)
Adam: If it weren’t for the woman You gave me I wouldn’t have done it.

God: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
Us: If it weren’t for the forefather You gave us we wouldn’t have fallen.

How dare we claim we would have been far different from Adam if we had been in his place! No, we are just like our father.
